The reader is invited to read my previous post Schism Part 1 first.  Here, I would like to continue to examine what Catholic prophecy says about the state of the Catholic Church in our times and the potential for schism.  Before commencing, the reader should note that schism by definition denotes two sides.  We can assume one for Christ and one antichrist.  

First, the Church has a lot of very good, fervent and loyal Christians among the Clergy and the laity who are consecrated and dedicated to Jesus Christ.  However, prophecy tells us that it is rebellion (apostasy) within the clergy and hierarchy of the Church (as in 2 Thessalonians 2:3) that will bring about schism as indicated in Ezekiel 34:4-12.  We, the sheep of the flock, are nonetheless required to remain faithful to the Pope no matter what.  As Our Lord said to Vassula Ryden: beware of gossip; beware of these who condemn and judge the Pope, they are chatterers who congratulate themselves and each other while speaking against the Pope; trapped in their own reflections, they are carried away, misbehaving; My Church will always uphold the truth and will always keep it safe… so anyone who condemns the Vicar of My Church cannot be My disciple; [emphasis added] humility is missing from them! Is the Catholic Church at risk of becoming the predicted False Church?  No!  As Jesus said; the gates of hell will not prevail against it (Mathew 16:18).  If there is a schism, the true Catholic Church will most likely go underground as it has done in the past and thrived.  However, schism may well produce an alternative False Church and many are predicted to be deluded and follow this false church as described in 2 Thessalonians 2:11.  As Our Lady explained to Fr Gobi in 1989 we will have: arrived at the peak of the purification, of the great tribulation and of the apostasy.  The apostasy will be, as of then, generalised because almost all will follow the false christ and the false church. Then the door will be open for the appearance of the man or of the very person of the Antichrist! (To The Priests, Our Lady’s Beloved Sons, 12th Ed; locution 407, pg 656).

Perhaps one of the most well known prophecies about these end times that demonstrates the potential for schism in the Catholic Church is that of Our Lady’s words to Sister Sasagawa at Akita in Japan in 1973:  The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, bishops against bishops. The priests who venerate me will be scorned and opposed by their confreres…churches and altars sacked; the Church will be full of those who accept compromises and the demon will press many priests and consecrated souls to leave the service of the Lord. The demon will be especially implacable against souls consecrated to God (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_Akita).  That many consecrated souls (priests, nuns and religious) have left the service of the Lord since 1970 is now a matter of public record and there is an ongoing shortage of Priests (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Priest_shortage_in_the_Catholic_Church).

A schism by definition is a split within a Church.  In his epistle, the apostle Saint Jude Thaddeus, who witnessed the betrayal of Jesus by Judas Iscariot, tells us:  I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.  For admission has been secretly gained by some who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly persons who pervert the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. (Jude 1:3-4 RSV).  In other words, the Church will be infiltrated by the ungodly.

As described to Vassula Ryden by Our Lord: I am telling you there is a conspiracy among the shepherds who oppose the leader of them all [i.e. the Pope]; and the Destroyer [satan] leads them to profane My Holy Name and the rebellious spirit thriving within them now will exteriorise itself; have you not read, have you not understood? “a wretch will rise and his forces will come and profane the sanctuary citadel; they will abolish the Perpetual Sacrifice and install the disastrous abomination there” (True Life In God, message: 01/06/1993; see also Daniel 10:31).

As indicated extensively in his book “Infiltration: The Plot to Destroy the Church from Within” (2019) Taylor Marshal relates how the the Catholic Church succumbed to Modernism from the later part of the 19th century, throughout the 20th century and into the present day.  The state of the Church hierarchy was also made evident by Cardinal Pell before his death in 2023.  His comments highlight the Modernist thinking that is rife in the hierarchy of the Church at this time.  However, Cardinal Pell also noted that many young and new clergy are Orthodox (Demos Memorandum by Cardinal Pell; 2022; https://the-american-catholic.com/2025/04/24/demos-memorandum/). 

In 1907, Saint Pope Pius X in his encyclical Pascendi Dominici Gregis acknowledged: the fact that the partisans of error are to be sought not only among the Church’s open enemies; they lie hid, a thing to be deplored and feared, in her very bosom and heart, and are the more mischievous, the less conspicuously they appear.  (Pascendi Dominici Gregis, Encyclical of Pope Pius X on the Doctrines of the Modernists).  St Pope Pius X then states that they are among the ranks of the priesthood itself who vaunt themselves as reformers of the Church…..and assail all that is most sacred in the work of Christ, not sparing even the person of the Divine Redeemer, whom, with sacrilegious daring, they reduce to a simple mere man. (ibid).

As I have stated a number of times in my previous posts, Jesus himself predicted that he would be betrayed by his very own.  We can recognise these apostates by their fruits.  They rationalise the Gospel with humanist philosophy, they will seek to suppress the action of the Holy Spirit in the Church.  They will not encourage devotion to Our Lady.  They will ignore or undermine the Tradition of the Church.  They will even try to portray Jesus as some sort of misguided Social Worker.  Upon hearing them speak, one has to wonder why they became a Religious in the first place.  As Cardinal Pell lamented about the Church in 2022: The Christo-centricity of teaching is being weakened; Christ is being moved from the centre.  Sometimes Rome even seems to be confused about the importance of a strict monotheism, hinting at some wider concept of divinity; not quite pantheism but like a Hindu panentheism variant (Demos Memorandum by Cardinal Pell; 2022; https://the-american-catholic.com/2025/04/24/demos-memorandum/).

In the early 19th century, Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich indicated that at some point in the future, during the Great Tribulation that we are experiencing in our time; something will force a split in the Catholic Church and a good Church and a bad church are the likely result (see here).  She also provides us with a description of what the False Church will be like:  All in this church belonged to the earth, returned to the earth; all was dead, the work of human skill, a church of the latest style, a church of man’s invention like the new heterodox church in Rome (Life of Anne Catherine Emmerich, 1976, Vol 2, read pages 282-284 for a full description)….I passed over a dark, cold country to a large city, and I saw again the great, odd-looking church with nothing holy about it and innumerable planetary spirits labouring at it…The planetary spirits ascended and descended and shot down rays upon the workmen; but all was done in accordance with human reason.  All the steps deemed necessary or useful to the construction and maintenance of the church were in the most remote countries, and men and things, doctrines and opinions contributed thereto.  The whole picture was coloured with intense selfishness, presumption, and violence. I saw not a single angel or saint helping in the work….In the midst of it all I saw the devil under a thousand forms.  All was dark as night. It was horrible !(ibid).  

At the end of the 16th century and beginning of the 17th century, Our Lady appeared to Mother Mariana, a Conceptionist nun, in the Spanish colony of Ecuador, as it was at that time.  Apart from predicting the sexual abuse scandal in the Church in the 20th century, Our Lady told Mother Marianna that: “By means of this devotion [i.e. to Our Lady of Good Success], Our Lord would work great miracles, spiritual as well as material, first for her Convent [in Ecuador], so that in it He would always find a home, and second, for the devout faithful, above all those at the end of the 19th and the 20th century, who would be favored of His Heart, for in that period Hell would be unleashed and many souls would be lost.” (The Admirable Life of Mother Mariana, by Fr Manuel Sousa Pereira 1790; Vol 2; Translation by Marian T Horvat, PhD. 3rd Ed. 2014; pg 17)

In her visions of Our Lord’s descent into hell after the crucifixion, Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich describes how Lucifer was chained up and cast into the abyss: In the centre [of hell] was an abyss of darkness.  Lucifer was cast into it, chained, and thick black vapour mounted up around him.  This took place by the Divine Decree [i.e. by God].  I heard that Lucifer (if I do not mistake) will be freed again for a while fifty or sixty years before the year 2000 A.D. [emphasis added]  I have forgotten many other dates that were told to me.  Some other demons are to be freed before Lucifer, in order to chastise and tempt mankind.  I think that some are let loose now in our time [i.e. early 19th century] and others will be freed shortly after our time [later 19th century or 20th century?]  (The Life of Jesus Christ and other Biblical Revelations; 1986, Volume 4, pg: 353-354).  Note this time period for Lucifer’s release corresponds with the post Second World War period of the 20th century and the Second Vatican Council.  It also corresponds to the Modernist takeover of the hierarchy in the Catholic Church as outlined in Taylor Marshall’s book “Infiltration”.

In 1846 Our Lady told Melanie at La Salette about the calamity in The Church, notably in France at that time:  [2] The priests, ministers of my Son, by their wicked manner of life, by their irreverence and impiety in celebrating the Holy Mysteries, by their love of money, honour and pleasures, priests have become cesspools of impurity.  Yes, the sins of priests cry out for vengeance, and vengeance looms over their heads….[5] The heads, the leaders of God’s people have neglected prayer and penance, and the demon has obscured their minds.  They have become those roving stars that the old devil will drag with his tail in order to cause them to perish…(see also Revelations Ch 12:4).  [11] In the year 64, Lucifer with a great number of demons will be unleashed from hell….[I contend this is a reference to both times 1864 and 1964 as indicated by Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich].

In 1993, Our Lady told Fr Gobi of the Marian Movement of Priests (MMP) that the Church had entered into the time of the great trial (To The Priests, Our Lady’s Beloved Sons, 12th Ed; locution 486)…..The great trial has come for the Church, so violated by the evil spirits, so divided in its unity, so darkened in its holiness.  See how error has flooded throughout it, error which leads to the loss of the true faith.  Apostasy is spreading everywhere (ibid).

Many priestly and consecrated lives have become dried up by impurity, seduced by pleasures and the search for comfort and well-being. The faithful are being drawn in by the enticements of a world which has [again] become pagan, or by the countless sects which are spreading more and more (ibid).

The hour of its great trial has above all come for the Church, because it will be shaken by the lack of faith, obscured by apostasy, wounded by betrayal, abandoned by its children, divided by schisms, possessed and dominated by Freemasonry, turned into fertile soil from which will spring up the wicked tree of the man of iniquity, the Antichrist, who will bring his kingdom into its interior. (ibid). 

More recently, in the True Life in God messages, Our Lord laments the Apostasy within His Church: Of all those who preach My Gospel, very few actually are working with Me and for My Kingdom (True Life in God, message, August 5-29, 1990).  Again Our Lord states that he will be betrayed by His very own: Do not be bewildered, My child. Do not stand mystified with what I have given you to write for it has been foretold that in your days My Church would be betrayed by one who was My very own, just like Judas, and Her apostasy would come from within Her. [emphasis added] I would be betrayed by those who shared My Meals, who had bonds with Me, who drank and ate with Me. But very soon now, everything that is covered will be uncovered and what I have said in parables and in metaphors will be made clear.  I shall unveil My proverbs and parables to the poor.  Before this generation has passed away, with My Power and My Glory, I shall overthrow the False Prophet (ibid)…..I know all about him, I know him inside out and I tell you: he shall never reach the place of rest.  I, the Lord, shall give you My child visions of he who carries on himself the blood of many, and of those who worship him. Stay awake, praying at all times for strength to stand with confidence by Me (ibid).

In His final message to Vassula Ryden shortly before her death in September 2024, Our Lord said to Vassula: repent! and come back to Me with all your heart, generation, so that I may spare you; turn to Me and I, who am rich in graciousness will spare you; I will spare you if you repent; hear Me; let a year or two pass by then all the visions you have seen daughter [i.e Vassula], will unfold, visions that were like a sealed book and uncomprehend[ed], will unfold; yes in a short time less than you think; [emphasis added]many who ignored My Merciful Hand, will try to flee, but I will pursue them, not so as to punish them but by pity will be gracious to them; soon I will show my fury to the nations who turned against Me and My glare will resemble a devouring fire, My breath, downpour of lit up hailstones devouring everything on its way, caverns will give way and bunkers will be crushed, letting no one inside to shelter and save himself; offer your prayers from today, offer them for the remnant that will be left; for the arrogance of men will be humbled the surviving remnant shall bring forth good fruits.
